At a certain point simply learning your favorite rock songs just is not enough, you want to learn to play lead and sound like your favorite guitarists. Ringo did not write at all. John and Paul did make it a point, out of kindness or a novelty to make sure he had one song on every album. Every one would have at least one song on every album. In the beginning for Ringo, they choose standards such as “Honey Don’t” an old Carl Perkins standard or “Act Naturally” by Johnny Russell/Vonie Harrison which was a phenomenal choice for both songs. I cant picture John, Paul or George pulling either of these off any better. In the end they were able to pen such songs as Yellow Submarine Octopus’s Garden and With a Little Help From my Friends Art jam team building for Ringo to sing.
If you ever get a chance to read about Steve Vai’s 10 hour workout (from a guitar magazine in the late 80’s), it is a great example of focusing on 1 thing at a time. Obviously as a beginner guitarist you won’t be practicing for 10 hours, if you do, you’re likely to injure yourself. The length and content of your practice is is related to your experience level. If you are an absolute newbie, don’t push too hard. If you are getting sore hands and wrists after 15 mins – take a break. It takes time for the motor-skills and associated muscles, tendons and biological wiring to attune and develop new dexterity.
The Indra Club featured a neon elephant outside the front door and a small cramped stage at the back of the club. The shows usually included strippers and sex shows and sometime nude female wrestlers. The regulars at this venue consisted of a cross section of the Reeperbahns seedy underbelly of drug pushers, transvestites and gangsters, who were not shy about flashing or using their arsenal of weapons when the occasion was called upon and this rogue bunch were not exactly thrilled when these oddly dressed English boys who showed up ready to entertain.

“I didn’t have time to rehearse” is the worst excuse you can have. And I hear it continuously. To help cure this, schedule your practice session into your day the same as other “have-to’s”. Classes, work, prepare dinner, put the kids into bed, practice guitar. If it’s important to you, treat it like that.
Make sure that every string’s tune sounds just like the sound of its corresponding key on the keyboard. And with that, you now know how to tune your guitar!
